Best Places To Visit In Gokarna

Even though Gokarna is not a really well-known destination compared to our Neighbouring state, Goa, it still has a charm of its own. Away from the hustle and bustle of stressful city life, this beach destination offers you a getaway into the tranquil Arabian Sea and the sparkling golden sands. You will be mesmerized by the sun blessing and illuminating the sands. 

There are several attractions in Gokarna, that you should not miss. It is located near Goa, so it is also a great opportunity for Goans to experience something unique as well! With so places to explore in Gokarna, you will never be bored! 

Shree Mahabaleshwara Swami Temple

Shree Mahabaleshwara Temple is a landmark and one of the best places to visit in Gokarna. This temple is built using white granite and showcases the excellence of Dravidian temple architecture. Inside the temple, there is a 6 feet tall Shiva Linga which is worshipped as Atmalinga in the temple. 

Apart from the Shiva Linga, the temple also has a 1500-year-old carved stone figure of Lord Shiva. The temple is mentioned in Mahabharata and Ramayana as well. The temple is as significant as Kashi and hence, it is also known as Dakshin Kashi or Kashi of South.

Gokarna Beach

Gokarna Main Beach is known for its natural beauty, with a picturesque shoreline surrounded by hills and coconut trees. The beach holds religious importance as it is situated near the Mahabaleshwar Temple. Pilgrims often visit the temple and may take a dip in the sea as part of their religious rituals. Unlike some of the more crowded beaches in the region, Gokarna Main Beach is relatively peaceful, making it an ideal spot for those seeking a quieter and serene environment. While the beach is not as bustling as some others in the area, visitors can still enjoy activities like beach walks, relaxing by the shore, and taking in the scenic views. Gokarna, in general, is known for its laid-back and less commercialized atmosphere compared to other coastal destinations. This is reflected in the ambiance of Gokarna Main Beach. The beach is known for offering beautiful views during sunset, making it a favorite spot for evening strolls and relaxation.

Kudle Beach

Kudle Beach is one of the many famous beaches of Gokarna. It is a short trek away from Om Beach. The beach offers solace and a serene atmosphere. This beach is usually deserted, except during the peak season from November to February. This beach is perfect for those who want a quiet atmosphere and want to avoid large crowds. Many local people prefer this beach for practising yoga and also for morning or evening walks.

Om Beach

Om Beach is among the most unique beaches in India since it is shaped as “Om” the prominent Hindu symbol. It is one of the best places to visit in Gokarna. The beach offers plenty of adventure sports such as speedboating and surfing. The beach is lined up with shacks, restaurants and cheap accommodations as well. Rocky black formations adorn the beach, and it gives it a charm of its own.

Half Moon Beach

Half Moon Beach is a smaller, less crowded and beautiful beach located in the town of Gokarna. It is separated from Om Beach by a cliff. You can spot various traditional-style Indian huts along the beach, giving it a rustic and idyllic feel.

 

Even though there are no watersports available at the beach, you can still do various things at the beach such as swimming, canoeing, paddle boats, camping and cabins. There is delicious lip-smacking food available at shack restaurants as well!

Paradise Beach

Paradise Beach, also known as the ‘Full Moon Beach’ is located across the coast of Gokarna Town. It is a secluded beach that can only be reached only after taking a boat Om Beach. You can also reach the beach after a small trek which start from Om Beach.

The beach is 150 metres long and around 70 perfect of the beach is covered in rocks. The rest of the beach is adorned with white sand. There are not many watersports on the beach but is the perfect place to swim. It is the best place in Gokarna to find solace and serenity.

Getting Here

By Air

Sunset Cafe is located on the main beach near Kariyappa Temple. The nearest airport from Gokarna is the Dabolim Airport in Goa. The airport is connected to Indian and International cities. From the airport, taxi services are available as well.

By Train

The Nearest Railway Station is Gokarna Road, which is around 10 kilometers from Gokarna. Trains from various major cities in India such as Bangalore, Mumbai, Pune, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad & Jaipur halt at Gokarna Road Railway Station. You can avail of taxi or Auto services to Gokarna as well.

By Road

Gokarna is well-connected by roads from all over Karnataka, including Bengaluru, Mangalore, Hubli and other cities of Karnataka. You can also catch the overnight bus from the various cities such as Bangalore, Mumbai, Pune & Hyderabad to reach to Gokarna. Travelling by road is one of the best experiences, especially on the coastal Indian roads.
